Kiora is rapidly learning that evil and lies come in shades of black and white and swirling greys, but nothing could have prepared her for the shock of leaving Meros.

Kiora and her protector Emane step through the pass into a world they never knew existed but were always meant to save, only to find it far worse than they could have ever imagined. Good has been forced into hiding for its own survival, while the rest of the land bows to the Shadow, a force that pushes any remaining thoughts of Dralazar from Kiora’s mind. This land is full of new creatures, each more dangerous than the last. Her visions have taken on a deadly twist, and magic, or what comes of it, was never so real. And then there is Alcander: a Tavean, their guide, and an entirely different kind of trouble.

Kiora thought she had never heard a lie until she was sixteen. But she was wrong. Her entire existence was based on nothing but. She thought that evil did not exist. Lie. That magic was not real. Lie. And that the land of Meros was all there was. One more lie.

With Aleric telling her that evil is knocking on the door and that she is the only one who can stop them she has a choice to make. Refuse, or start the wildest most painful ride of her life.
She reluctantly dips her toe into her new existence of magic and threads, dragons and shapeshifters, and the person who wants to take control of it all: the evil Dralazar.

However, this journey was never meant to be hers alone. She will be accompanied by a Protector. To her disbelief, and utter irritation they name the hotheaded, stubborn, non -magical, (albeit gorgeous) Prince Emane. They will have to trust each other with their lives, but right now Kiora would settle for a non hostile conversation.

And now it comes down to this, If you had never heard a lie, would you know when you heard one? Is knowing good from evil innate? Kiora finds herself having to decide who lives and who dies on those very questions.

My Review

This is a well written, true fantasy novel. Devri Walls does a wonderful job mixing in known fantasy creatures like the pegasus and dragons, with creatures of her imagination like taveans and shifters. Both books in this series have a wonderful amount of heart, delightful characters and fascinating settings.

Kiora, Emane and Drustan continue to embark on their journey through the unknown world over the mountains, behind the newly opened enchanted gate. Where Kiora and Emane grew up in a world free of magic (with few exceptions) this is one void of any non-magical beings. And as they get deeper into the mysterious land and encounter the inhabitants they learn that not only are there no non-magical beings, but all of the goodness has also been wiped out from the world. As they progress, they have to make some unlikely allies, unveiling more of Kiora's true calling, and when their group starts to come apart, Kiora turns to her new friend Alcander, forming a bond that starts to grow much deeper than she first would have thought. The prophecy is coming true, but does Kiora have what it takes to bring light into this world swallowed by shadow?

Main character
Kiora is a great leading lady. She is still a newbie in the magic world, learning and developing her skills as she goes, but she doesn't have the typically rash, immaturity you usually find with this type of character. I love her emotions, her empathy for all creatures, good or evil, and how well the author describes why she is feeling what she is. I like how it remains consistent throughout the whole story (she's not heartless and ferocious on the battle field and then turns into a weepy, spineless jellyfish when swooning over her crush). I also like Emane and the new Alcander, they are very similar with their snarky (slightly arrogant) attitudes, especially when they are together, fighting for Kiora's attention. And of course there is Drustan; even though he goes through some rough times during this story, he is so loyal to Kiora and offers her wonderful insight and wisdom.

Time/setting
This is a whole new world for Kiora and Emane. Walls is very good describing the setting in great detail, the reader would have no problem imagining where the characters are traveling. Kiora, Emane, and Drustan travel from mountain, through the air, over seas, onto islands, and into caves. Each setting is very graphically described as well as the mood corresponding to each place.

Cover art
I really like the cover for this book, depicting the back of Kiora looking out through an arch to a broken, stormy sky. It does describe the mood of this book, walking into a world of mostly dark evil, but a sliver of light shining through.
Swoonworthy Points: 5
Even though Emane loves Kiora, she has yet to fully commit her feelings to him. And it doesn't help that when they touch or kiss, if Kiora accidentally releases magic into him, he gets hurt or will even go unconscious. Then introduce Alcander: he is very similar to Emane in attitude and arrogance, he is a prince in his world just like Emane. But the big difference is Alcander is a magical being, and the exchange of magic flow between the two is a part of the "experience" as he explains to Kiora. Even though Kiora is very attached to Emane as her protector, she has to wrap her head around the fact that Alcander could be a better match for her.

Who would like this..
I would think this book would definitely fall under the young adult genre, and it would be appropriate for even young teens. There is no swearing, no sexual content, and no graphic violence. Just a good quality fantasy novel for all ages to enjoy.

Quotable Quotes:

"'Hey,' he protested, jerking back. 'I have a sense of humor.'
'No, you have a sense of sarcasm,' she corrected, turning to look at him with a smirk. 'It's not the same thing.'"

"Moving a hand from her waist, he suddenly cupped her face, pulling her into him with desperation. Their lips met and a fiery magic swirled between them. The little pops she had felt earlier were now glorious bursts of pleasure, moving from her head to her toes. Currents ebbed and flowed at every point their bodies touched. She as drowning in a sea of magic unlike anything she had ever felt before."
